John Sweet is my 5th great grand father. Abijah Sweets son John was the father to my great grandmother Mignonette Sweet Oliver. Any help with pictures or information would be greatly appreciated.

Find Family Members
I have not posted for some time on this blog, but I wanted to see if there are any researchers out there that can help me go further than my 4th Great Grandfather, John Sweet who married Alpha Lewis. This is quite a mystery to some of the people I communicate with on Ancestry. I am in great hopes that there are some more Sweet Family researchers out there that will contact me and lead me in other directions to help me get the information I long to know.
Have a great day.
Have a great day.

Hiram Norton Sweet (1806-1903)
Hiram Norton was born in 1806 to John Sweet and Alpha Lewis in Canada. The family resided in Leeds County, Canada West (Ontario), Canada in 1807. Hiram never left Canada during his life in this world.
Hiram married Hannah A. around 1833 to my belief in Canada. Finding Hannah's surname would be a thrill to have to following that part of the family line. They had 7 children: Marshall Norton, Zebulon Jesse, Laura Jane, Malissa, John Fredrick, Murat "Merrit" H., and Julia.
In the 1851 Canadian Census Hiram was a Carpenter up until his death in 1903. He is bured at Baptist Burying Ground in the Rear of Leeds, Canada.

Clarissa Sweet (1805-?)
Clarissa Sweet was born in Canada to John Sweet and Alpha Lewis in 1805. The family resided in Leeds & Landsdowne, Rear of Leeds Twp., Ontario, Canada in 1807.
In 1816, at the age of 11 my research has lost Clarissa. I have done a bit of research online but come up empty handed, as female's are hard to track.

Abijah Sweet (1804-1889)
Abijah Sweet is my 3rd Great-Grandfather born to John Sweet and Alpha Lewis. Most of my research has Abijah born in 1804 but I have also seen 1803. I would love to get a fact on the exact date he was born. The family resided in Canada in 1807.
Canadian Census reports show Abijah residing with his family from 1807-1816 in Leeds & Landsdowne, Rear of Leeds Twp., Ontario, Canada. At the age of 39 he resided in South Crosby, Leeds, Ontario, Canada.
Abijah married Mariah Rhodes approximately 1832 and they had 7 children: Nicholas Lewis, Mehitable, Sylvester Emery Perry, Alba "Alby" Sylvester, John M., George Augustus, and Scott.
In 1844 Abijah migrated to Wisconsin with his two brothers Elijah and John Fredrick and stayed in Wisconsin up to his death.
Census records reveal in 1850 that he was a Farmer in Portland, Dodge, Wisconsin.
Abijah has 2 Land Patents in Wisconsin:

The pre-1908 Wisconsin Land Records documents the transfer of land ownership from the federal government to individuals. This data can help genealogists associate an individual with a specific location, date and time to authenticate the title transfer and find clues to their family line. Individuals described in this set would be patentees, assignees, warrantees, widows or heirs of the transfer. The legal land description location is given, along with the issue date of the title transfer.
In 1870 he resided in Bear Creek, Sauk, Wisconsin as a Farmer.
In 1880 he was residing in Spring Green, Sauk, Wisconsin, as a Farmer. Abijah resided next to his son, George A, daughter-in-law and two grandsons.
On the 28th of January 1889 Abijah died in Bear Creek, Sauk, Wisconsin and is buried at Spring Green Cemetery, Spring Green, Sauk, Wisconsin; Row 6W3.
Since Abijah is my 3rd Great-Grandfather I am in hopes to find a picture of him and any more information that my direct line family members can provide for me.

William S. Sweet (1800-?)
William S. Sweet was born in New York to John Sweet and Alpha Lewis in 1800. William was 7 years old when he resided with his family in Leeds & Landsdowne, Rear of Leeds Twp., Ontario, Canada in 1807 to 1816.
This is the extent of the research I have obtained about William. I have not done extensive research, but considering there are a few family members who are lost in the shuffle, I hope that with this blog that I can find other family members of this direct line that may have additional information.

John Fredrick Sweet (1798-?)
John Fredrick Sweet was born 1798 in New York to John Sweet and Alpha Lewis. He resided with his parents when they moved to Canada between 1800-1807 to 1811 in Leeds & Landsdowne, Rear of Leeds Twp., Ontario, Canada.
In 1844 to migrated to Wisconsin with his brother, Elijah "Eli" Taylor.
John is another secretive person that is hard to find any information. I thought that maybe he might have a land patent in Wisconsin, but could not find any information. Any new leads that I can find from others would be very welcomed.

Anna Sweet (1797-1857)
Anna Sweet was born in New York the 28th of February 1797 to John Sweet and Alpha Lewis.
In 1807 Anna was residing with her family in Leeds & Landsdowne, Rear of Leeds Twp., Ontario, Canada and stay in residence of Canada up until an 1850 Census.
Anna married Jehiel "Hiel" Sliter in November 1815 in Leeds, Ontario, Canada. They had 10 children: Pamela, Washington Lee, Cynthia, Alzina, Joel, Spencer Percival, Emily Minerva, Alonzo, Ernestus Chester, and Estella Ophella.
Census records of 1850 show Anna residing in Queensbury, Warren, New York, but in 1857 she was back in Leeds, Ontario, Canada upon her death the 27th of April 1857. Anna is buried at Baptist Burying Ground, Rear of Leeds, Ontario, Canada.
I have to admit that with the research of her children and how much she loved her immediate family, I find this women very remarkable. I would love to obtain a picture of Anna, as I have pictures of her husband.

Elijah "Eli" Taylor Sweet (1790-1885)
Elijah Taylor Sweet was born to John Sweet and Alpha Lewis on the 10th of May 1790 in New York.
I want to stress again that there is an article on the Internet that he was born in Oswego, Oswego County, New York. This is a false fact at the time of his birth, as Oswego was not a town in that time period. It may have been when the article was written for the magazine then circulated on the Internet. I lost my notes, but I found this out at the Genealogy Library when Oswego became a town.
Elijah resided with his family to Leeds & Landsdowne, Rear of Leeds Twp., Ontario, Canada in 1807 and remained a resident until 1843.
He married Emma Ann Sly in 1817 and they had 6 children: Lydia, Elijah Judson, Arnold Lewis, Myron, Hiram, and Ella.
In 1844 Elijah and his immediate family moved to Wisconsin. Records show them living in Dayton, Green Lake, Wisconsin in 1860 and in 1861 residence in Portland, Dodge, Wisconsin when Elijah's wife, Emma Ann died on the 11th of November 1861.
I would be curious on the cause of death of Emma just because it strikes me that during that era women lived longer than the men unless there was something misunfortune.
Elijah had 4 Land Patents in the State of Wisconsin, which were:

On the 19th of October 1864 Elijah remarried to Fanny Knapp in Walworth County, Wisconsin. Their residence was in Town of Bristol, Dane, Wisconsin. The 1870 Census show Elijah as a retired Farmer up to the time of his death on the 31st of May 1885.
Elijah Taylor is buried at Sweet Cemetery, Town of Bristol, Dane, Wisconsin, which is located on County Hwy West near the intersection of Stone Quarry Rd and County Hwy West. Also known as Quarry Cemetery.
In the Sun Prairie Countryman, dated June 4, 1885 Elijah's obituary read:
The venerable father of Mr. Lewis Sweet died at the house of his son last Friday and was buried on Sunday. The deceased was ninety year of age and was one of the earliest pioneers of the state.
Eli T. Sweet was born May 10th, 1796, in the state of New York. When a mere lad he removed with his mother to Canada. After residing there for several years he emigrated to southern Wisconsin about the year 1840, locating first in Jefferson County and subsequently in Dane. For several years past her has lived with his son, A. L. Sweet on the old homestead in the Town of Sun Prairie, near the Bristol boundary. Four sons and two daughters survive him; of the former Elijah is the eldest, living near Reedsburg, Wisconsin. A. L. residing as aforesaid, Myron, of Bristol, and Hiram, recently removed from the Town of York, to southern Dakota. One of the daughters is a resident of Canada, the other of Northern Dakota. Up to a year or two ago the old gentleman was well preserved and remarkably vigorous and active, but for several months preceding his death was very feeble and almost helpless. Four score years and ten-truly a long and well-fought span.
Thanks to other genealogist who were a direct line with Elijah Taylor, I was able to obtain quite a bit of information on him, but I am sure there is more.
Elijah Taylor and his sister, Lydia were twins.

John Sweet (1767-1813) & First 4 Children
John Sweet is my 4th Great Grandfather and with two years of general research I am not able to find who his parents were. I have been on several genealogy sites, as well as, the most popular, Ancestry. But here is what I have found in my research:
John Sweet was born 18 Mar 1767 - majority of researchers have him born in New York, but there has also been a few other states that he was born in. So I feel if I can get a concrete fact on this that it would help tremendously. I would also, like any other, would like to see or obtain a copy of the fact. John married Alpha Lewis 7 Dec 1786 in New York. From this immediate family it seems to me they had to get married due to the first born was brought into the world in 1785.
John and Alpha had 11 children: Cynthia, Allen Miner, Jared Lewis, Lydia, Elijah "Eli" Taylor, Anna, John Fredrick, William S., Abijah, Clarrisa, and Hiram Norton. From 1807 to the time of John's death, he along with his family resided in the Leeds & Landsdowne, Rear of Leeds Twp., Ontario, Canada. John Sweet died 5th of April 1813 in Sweets Corner, Leeds, Ontario, Canada West.
To obtain more information on this secretive family will take some work and hopefully to obtain a picture of my 4th Greatfather would be a blessing. In this post I have started with the first 4 children of John and Alpha.
Now of all the children, Cynthia Sweet is very hard to research. Most of the time you can get a bit more information from a spouse, but he is a mystery also. Cynthia was born in 1785 in New York. Researchers put her born in Oswego, New York but with the research I have done at the Genealogy Library - Oswego was not a town during that time period. The article written in the magazine by a relative was written after the fact and when written at the time, Oswego was obviously a town then. My research also showed Cynthia residing in Leeds & Landsdowne, Rear of Leeds Twp., Ontario, Canada in 1807 and 1811. Cynthia Sweet married Knapp McKittrick. Now Knapp could be his given name or possibly he went by his middle name. But unfortunately I am coming up empty handed on both of them. Maybe someone who reads this post possibly could provide some information.
Allen Miner Sweet was born May 12th 1787 in New York and resided with his family in 1807 (Leeds & Landsdowne, Rear of Leeds Twp., Ontario, Canada).Allen married Rachel Knapp January 28th 1810. They had one child, Lorinda who was born February 4th 1811 and died March 31st 1811. To my belief, whatever or however Lorinda died, Rachel was either devasted, possibly fallen into depression, as she died July 17th 1811. I am only assuming as there could of been an outbreak of disease during Rachel's pregnancy also.I have done some Internet searching to see if there was any outbreak at that time but could not find any information. This does intrigue me to find out what did happen, especially since they were only married for a little over a year.During the War of 1812 Allen Miner Sweet was a Sergeant in the 2nd Flank Company of the Leeds Militia and served at Gananoque; prominent in local polities, he represented the area at the Gourlay meeting in 1818. In later years he was appointed a Justice of the Peace; he was also an active Methodist and served as a Lay Preacher for many years.August 16th 1815, Allen remarried to Desiree Sly. They had 9 children: Telmond Edna, Rachel, Ira Tibbet, Amos Tibbet "Little", Electa "Runy", Lecy Ann, Allen Healy, Hester Ann, and Parthena. Allen remained residing in Canada.Allen Miner is buried at Lillie's Baptist Cemetery in Sweets Corner, Leeds County, Ontario, Canada. Lillie's Baptist Cemetery is on Highway 15.
Jared Lewis Sweet was born 3rd of March 1790 in New York and was residing with his family from 1807-1811 in Leeds & Landsdowne, Rear of Leeds Twp., Ontario, Canada.Although Jared Lewis moved to Canada in 1807 with his parents, I believe he he was militia man during 1812-1815. The year of Arrival, records show is 1871, age 81. In 1813 Jared Lewis married Margaret Martha Purdy. They had 7 children: Lydia, Mary Ann, Nancy Ann, Elizabeth "Eliza", Hiram, William Arthur, and Belinda C.They resided in Haldimand Township, Northcumberland, Ontario, Canada from 1816 through 1871. In 1816, Jared and Ziba Marcus Phillips leased Lot 5, Concession VII, Leeds. In 1871 records show Jared's occupation as a Minister, E. Methodist. During my research I found an comment that during the War of 1812 some militia men were not treated correctly which led to some of the militia men to immigrate to Canada. I only found one comment on this and could not back it up. I would also like to get confirmation on when Jared died. I believe it would have to be from 1875 on.
Lydia Sweet was born 10th of May 1796 in New York. She resided with her family between 1800-1807 and resided with them until 1816 in Leeds & Landsdowne, Rear of Leeds Twp., Ontario, Canada. She married Walter Davies and they had 3 children: Alcena, Abijah S., and Adelia Clarrisa. Not sure when Lydia and Walter were married but I am going to assume 1821 since their first child was born August 1822.Female siblings are very hard to track for information and sometimes we rely not only on other genealogists but possible from the spouse research. In either case right now, I have not been successful in my research with Lydia.
